Rotary Burlington Lakeshore Pledges $200,000 to Support For All Minds Campaign

Rotary Burlington Lakeshore announced a landmark pledge of $200,000 to the Joseph Brant Hospital Foundation in support of the For All Minds campaign, supporting the redevelopment and expansion of the mental health & addictions unit at Joseph Brant Hospital.

This new space will have a transformational impact on mental health and addictions services for individuals and families across Burlington and Halton Region.

This significant commitment reflects Rotary’s long-standing dedication to improving community health and supporting vulnerable populations. Funds will directly support enhanced treatment environments, expanded programming, and improved care transitions for patients seeking mental health and substance-use support.

“Every family in Burlington is touched by mental health in some way,” said Will Pugh, President of Rotary Burlington Lakeshore. “Our pledge demonstrates Rotary’s belief that every person deserves compassionate, timely, and dignified mental health care.”

The For All Minds campaign addresses the growing demand for mental health services in the region, supporting upgrades to treatment spaces, increased crisis care capacity, and the expansion of therapy and outpatient programming.

“We are incredibly grateful for the support of Rotary Burlington Lakeshore for this much-needed project,” said Ashley Davidson, President & CEO of the Joseph Brant Hospital Foundation. “This generous gift will have a life-changing and lasting impact on patients and families who rely on mental health care at Joseph Brant Hospital.”

JBH Welcomes New Chief of Staff

Joseph Brant Hospital was pleased to welcome Dr. Rahima Nenshi as Chief of Staff in January 2026.

Dr. Nenshi joins JBH from St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton (SJHH), where she served as Chair of the Medical Advisory Committee. A visionary and values-driven leader, she has championed innovation and equity through hospital-wide physician engagement initiatives co-created in partnership with staff and physician leadership. These efforts have strengthened collaboration, enhanced quality and safety for patients, and elevated the physician experience. She also serves as Co-Chair of the Common Credentials Committee for both SJHH and Hamilton Health Sciences, providing regional oversight for professional staff appointments, credentialing, and governance.

Over her tenure at SJHH, Dr. Nenshi has held a range of inaugural leadership appointments, including Director of Acute Care Surgery, SJH Lead for the Division of Perioperative Care, and Director of Postgraduate Medical Education. Under her leadership, the Acute Care Surgery Program evolved into a sustainable, team-based model. Within her role in the Department of Education and Learning, she strengthened academic partnerships with McMaster University and elevated the hospital’s teaching and research profile. She also strengthened educational infrastructure, improved resident onboarding and safety processes, and contributed to accreditation success for postgraduate training programs.

An exceptionally skilled and compassionate surgeon, Dr. Nenshi’s clinical practice spans minimally invasive, acute care, surgical oncology, and general surgery. She is an Associate Professor of Surgery at McMaster University, where she is widely recognized as an inspirational mentor and advocate for the physician voice. Her leadership approach is future-focused, inclusive, and driven by a deep commitment to quality and patient-centred care. Known for bringing diverse voices together, she leads with clarity, authenticity, and purpose – always with a focus on meaningful impact.

Dr. Nenshi holds a Doctor of Medicine and a Master’s in Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics from McMaster University, and completed her General Surgery Residency, Minimally Invasive Surgery Fellowship, and Surgical Oncology Fellowship at the University of Toronto. She is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (FRCSC) and a graduate of the Rotman Advanced Health Leadership Program. Her contributions have been recognized through numerous awards, including Hamilton Top 40 Under 40 and multiple academic and clinical research prizes.

At JBH, Dr. Nenshi will play a pivotal role in advancing the hospital’s strategic vision by fostering clinical and operational excellence, championing innovation and equity in care delivery, and strengthening physician engagement. She will provide medical leadership through key initiatives such as Project Harmony, the implementation of a new digital health information system (Dovetale), major program redevelopments, and the continued evolution of the medical model of care.

TD Bank Group donates $500,000 to the For All Minds Campaign

Burlington, ON — TD Bank Group has made a $500,000 donation to the For All Minds Campaign to support the creation of a new Older Adult Cognitive Health Program at Joseph Brant Hospital.

“At JBH, our healthcare teams strive to achieve excellence in timely, high-quality patient care, with a focus on a senior-friendly approach for our older adult population,” said Leslie Motz, Executive Vice-President, Clinical and Chief Nursing Executive. “One of our organizational focuses is embedding senior-friendly practices, education and mindset throughout our hospital, and this funding will allow us to create this new program specifically designed for senior-friendly care.”

This gift will enable JBH to hire additional specialized staff, including a Nurse Practitioner and Occupational & Recreational Therapists, to support the program’s goal of addressing the complex needs of older adults. The Nurse Practitioner will educate patients and their families, diagnose and treat acute illnesses through medication, and manage care, including coordinating lab work and other diagnostic tests. Dedicated Occupational and Recreational Therapists will enhance care delivery within this model by focusing on improved physical, cognitive, emotional, and social needs, allowing patients to develop skills and behaviours they can use in daily living when discharged to the community.

“At TD, we understand the complex and unique health challenges that seniors face,” said Anna Iacobelli, Senior Vice President, Metro West Region, TD Bank Group. “By supporting the For All Minds Campaign, we’re helping older adults at Joseph Brant Hospital access specialized resources to support early detection and prevention, transition home sooner, and ensure they have access to the care they need as they continue their recovery closer to family and support networks.”

Rooted in best practice, the Older Adult Cognitive Health Program will improve on existing practices by providing the enhanced clinical resources and structure needed to best support our growing senior patient population, who suffer from mental health illnesses and the unique challenges faced by this patient population (including chronic diseases, falls, wandering, etc.).

“We are immensely grateful to have received this gift, which will make a tremendous difference for our older patients and their families,” said Ashley Davidson, Joseph Brant Hospital Foundation President & CEO. “This generous support will enable this unique program to deliver the best care possible to this growing population throughout the hospital.” For more information about the For All Minds Campaign, please visit forallminds.ca.

Another step in the Michael and Laura Paletta Mental Health and Addictions Unit Redevelopment

Yesterday marked the exciting first step in the transformation of our Mental Health and Addictions (MHA) Unit at Joseph Brant Hospital. Ontario’s Deputy Premier & Minister of Health Sylvia Jones, Associate Minister of Mental Health & Addictions Vijay Thanigasalam, Burlington MPP Natalie Pierre, and Oakville North–Burlington MPP Effie Triantafilopoulos joined leaders from the hospital and the Foundation, board members, and donors for a tour and a groundbreaking ceremony to launch this major redevelopment.

This renewal of our Inpatient Unit will include:
✅ More beds, including a new 6-bed psychiatric intensive care space
✅ Private rooms with ensuite washrooms
✅ Specialized therapeutic areas
✅ A secure outdoor courtyard overlooking Lake Ontario

The Joseph Brant Hospital Foundation is playing a vital role in bringing this vision to life through its For All Minds fundraising campaign, which aims to raise $20 million in support of the redevelopment. Thanks to the incredible generosity of donors—led by a transformative $5 million gift from Michael and Laura Paletta—the campaign has already surpassed the halfway mark. This remarkable community-driven effort will ensure that everyone in our region has access to the highest standard of mental health and addictions care, in a space designed for healing, dignity, and hope.

The second phase of the initiative will focus on the redevelopment of the Outpatient MHA Unit and the creation of a new Child and Youth Mental Health Day Hospital, expanding program space to support the specialized needs of these vulnerable patients. The full enhancement of JBH’s MHA facilities is expected to be completed between 2027 and 2028.

With generous support from the Government of Ontario and our community, we’re building a modern, compassionate environment for patients and families across the Halton Region.

Recognizing TD Bank Group’s commitment to youth mental health

As we continue to live with the impacts of a global pandemic, we are still facing disruptions in our daily lives. We are searching for a new normal, and while we have all been affected, nobody has felt this more than the children.

Studies have shown that in the last year, more than 50% of children and adolescents have reported clinically significant depressive symptoms.

Children and adolescents have often been overlooked and underserved when it comes to the treatment of mental illness and the pandemic has greatly increased an already urgent need for early intervention and continuity of care throughout a child and adolescent’s care.

However, thanks to the generous support of donors like TD Bank Group, our Child and Adolescent Psychiatric (CAP) program has been there to provide youth, like Lindsay, with the right care at the right time.

Lindsay was struggling with asking for help.

“I come from a family that was always competitive, and wanting to be the best at whatever I did,” she said. “It always felt like there was no time to not be okay.”

When Lindsay was in her first year at Western University, she started to experience anxiety. She was living away from home for the first time and ended up leaving after her second year, feeling very alone and embarrassed to reach out.

“I thought I could push through whatever I was feeling,” she said.

Two years later, she felt like she was to the point that there was no passion or drive left. After a breakup with her boyfriend, and her first year not competing in competitive cheer after 18 years, it became too much to deal with.

“From then it was a continuous battle of many fights with my mom and built up anger with my whole life to be breaking down,” she said. “The day I called my doctor and balled my eyes out was the first time I felt relief. She explained I was not alone in all the feelings I had.”

After undergoing treatment, Lindsay is the happiest she has ever been.

“I am so grateful for the hard times looking back because it only made me stronger and have a way more positive outlook on life and am a big mental health advocate,” she said. “I still deal with anxiety today, but now I know how to deal with it and how to better myself instead of going down a dark hole again.”

Through the TD Ready Commitment, the Bank’s corporate citizenship platform, TD is committed to supporting innovative solutions like the CAP Program that are working to improve adolescent health and helping create more equitable outcomes for all.

Over the past eight years, the CAP Program has seen a 400% increase in referrals, while providing a significant reduction in wait times. Prior to the pandemic, the CAP Program achieved zero wait time for appointments with a child and adolescent psychiatrist, nurse and social worker, down from 52 days in 2013.

The impact on children and adolescents has been particularly hard during the pandemic and, as a result, the CAP Program referrals have increased exponentially over the past 18 months. Loss of control, feelings of uncertainty, and changes to routine are contributing to symptoms of anxiety, low mood, adjustment disorders, eating disorders, and parent-child relational problems.

The Joseph Brant Hospital Foundation is incredibly grateful to TD for their generosity in supporting leading practice healthcare in our community.

With their outstanding support, Joseph Brant Hospital will continue to deliver on our vision to provide compassionate care and exemplary service, every time for the youth and families in our community.
