Like most good ideas, the Antiques & Collectibles Live Auction hosted by the Auxiliary to Joseph Brant Hospital started with the passion of a few people and the desire to make positive change.
The Auxiliary, first established in 1959 had been raising money in support of the Hospital for 40 years when a group of volunteers came together to brainstorm new fundraising ideas, with an antique auction among them which received support.
This year, the auction will celebrate its 20th
Anniversary, having raised over $1 Million in support of Joseph Brant Hospital to date.
The very first auction was held at Mainway Arena in 1999 and raised over $36,000. The Auxilary added a spring auction in 2003 and have grown and adapted the event over the years.
What started out as a way for those downsizing or decluttering their homes has evolved. In fact, the auction has started to appeal to a new audience, as the DIY movement has taken hold and people are looking to refinish antique furniture and other items.
The Auxiliary is always accepting donations of items including:
- Antiques & Vintage Quality Furniture, Carpets, Lamps, Clocks, Art and Fine Linens
- Jewellery, Antique Watches and Pens
- China, Sterling Silver, Crystal and Figurines
- Collectibles including but not limited to; Antique Tools, Toys, Dolls, Coins, Sewing Kits, Railway Items, Memorabilia, etc.
All items are professionally appraised, picked up and stored until the time of auction and charitable tax receipts are issued for items donated at current market value.
The support from the community is key to the success of the auction, and community sponsors offset some of the cost associated with this event including Taylor Moving and Storage, the Burlington Storage Barn.
There are two auctions scheduled for 2018. The Spring Auction will take place on April 7, 2018, and the 20th
Anniversary Fall Auction is scheduled for September 15, 2018 taking place at St. Christopher's Anglican Church, Burlington.
